I Cry When I Pray

(Melanie Hart)

Music & Lyrics by Melanie Hart
From Melanie Hart's book, A New Thing: The Stories Behind the Music..."This song simply came from a phrase I spoke out one morning. As Jim and Madison were getting ready for work and school, I was taking a few minutes to read my Bible. When Jim walked into our room, I had tears in my eyes. I simply looked up at him and said, “I cry when I pray.” Once that phrase was out of my mouth, the song followed."
Psalm 130:1-7, “Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, That You may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning - Yes, more than those who watch for the morning. O Isreal, hope in the Lord; For with the LORD there is mercy, And with Him is abundant redemption.”

I Cry When I Pray

When I come to You in the sweetest hour of the day
With my head bowed low and Your Word on my knees,
There’s just something about the sweet release of the burdens of the day
Maybe that is why I cry when I pray.

When You talk with me in the garden of Your Word,
When You whisper Your new melodies for me to sing,
There’s just something that speaks to me in the deepest part of my soul
Maybe that is why I cry when I pray.

And I know I could spend more time on my knees
And I know that my tears are not in vain.

When you walked for me on the mountain to pray,
Tears of blood poured from your brow to the ground.
There’s just something about the sacrifice that you made for me that day
Maybe that is why I cry when I pray.

When Your innocence was ravaged by my sin,
When Your life flowed from Your body to the ground,
There’s just something about redemption that brings me to my knees.
Maybe that is why… Maybe that is why
Maybe that is why…I cry when I pray.
